Making the Shift from Production to Business Owner w/Amanda Howard

Growing a real estate team has a lot of difficult moments, and it’s something many agents aren’t prepared for. How do we avoid resenting our team when we face the inevitable difficult times? How do we make sure leading a team is actually what we want for ourselves? Why is it so important to treat real estate like a business and not a job?

On this episode, Amanda Howard shares the growing pains of growing her business to 30 agents and $181 million in volume.

If you are that servant and know that you’re the best option, you’re going to win. -Amanda Howard

3 Things We Learned From This Episode

How to avoid resenting the team you love (10:53 - 12:00)

As leaders, we are responsible for teaching, coaching, and supporting our team. If we take on too much and it feels like we’re not giving enough, we’ll stop feeling appreciated and start resenting our teams. It’s important to stay balanced and disciplined with your time and commitments.

Why you have to treat real estate like a business (14:57 - 15:22)

Real estate is unlike other businesses where people go to school for years to learn about it. Supplement your training with books, courses and coaches for real estate. Wrap your mind around the business concept. Set yourself up with hours, a structure, goals and a plan for the future.

How to handle conflict within the team (12:20 - 13:07 )

Amanda runs sales while her husband runs operations. If there’s a disagreement, and they are both passionate about it, they give their coach 2% of the decision, and he can help to direct either one of them in that situation. Anyone who is driven probably has a strong personality, and sometimes a third party can be helpful in resolving disagreement.

No matter what stage of our real estate journey we’re in, it’s important for us to run our jobs like a business. Early on, there can be a tendency to work from a place of scarcity and hustle so hard we end up burning out. It’s great to feel responsible for our people, but that responsibility shouldn’t become unhealthy. We have to be servant leaders who have the right structures in place to maintain balance in our lives.
